Animal Care Systems was founded in 1997 by a PhD, DVM Neuroscientist, Dr. Germain Rivard. He was a hands-on rodent behavior scientist who came to the conclusion that data collected from the animals was skewed by the absence of advanced technology for housing animals. Rudimentary motorized IVC racks were available that delivered fresh air to the rodents and removed waste air but this equipment was loud, emitted ultrasound, put heat loads and allergens into the room and, in addition, vibrated the rodents in their cages. He also noticed that the allergens released into the room from the motorized racks causing an increase in the rate of laboratory animal allergies as well as increasing the presence of waste gases such as ammonia which can be very repugnant to both people and rodents. Â He spent years researching animal behavior and evaluating the various caging technologies on the market and concluded that there was no system on the market that was focused on animal and technician welfare.
Dr. Rivard proceeded to invent a new style of individually ventilated cage, that would provide an optimal microenvironment for the rodents as well as a better work environment for the people that work with the animals. He invented the first motor free, ventilated rack system and called it the M.I.C.E. System. M.I.C.E. focusing on 4 fundamental necessities; M: microenvironmental comfort, I: isolation, C: Containment E: Enrichment. Dr. Rivard was a pioneer in the field of reduction and elimination of non-experimental variables which is now widely studied and implemented.

What we’ll expect from you and what you'll be doing:
- Leveraging your cost accounting expertise, attention to detail, love of technology/systems, and passion for being hands-on to handle the day-to-day financials, including AP, AR, tight cash management, payroll (including commissions), monthly close, preparation of financial reports, and other routine (and important!) accounting responsibilities to ensure all financial information is sound and to improve cash and margin position
- Strategically identifying, developing, and monitoring Key Performance Indicators to quickly and routinely identify profitability and fiscal health of the company
- Confidently facilitating executive-level conversations critical to company success and with meaningful and understandable analysis of financial data and trends you've identified to facilitate critical decision making and ensure ongoing financial sustainability
- Partnering with the Executive, Engineering, Sales, and Marketing teams to develop financial strategies, areas to improve margins and create efficiencies, and personally executing those strategies with accountability for results
- Using your strong organizational skills to develop, review, and monitor annual budgets and forecasts accurately
- Implementing, documenting, and maintaining adequate and effective internal controls to ensure flawless audits, with vigilance about reporting any fraud, abuse or waste of company assets
- Other responsibilities as assigned
Job requirements
- Authorization to work in the US
- Ability to work onsite daily (start time is flexible)
- Minimum 7+ years experience as a Controller with cost accounting knowledge/experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
- Strong computer skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite (with advanced Excel skills), ERP, and CRM software systems
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- Experience with change management in small teams and departments
- Ability to work with a CPA firm to do end of year tax filings
