Full Job Description

A senior product development role creating and delivering innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement results. This Breakfast R&D team role focuses on core research and innovation for Birch Benders making delightfully delicious foods meeting consumers healthy lifestyle needs. Core products include premium pancakes, frozen waffles, baking mixes, frostings, syrups, and a pipeline of new ideas readied to expand the brand into new categories. Partnering with the Brand Team and our Sovos Brands R&D center of excellence, the Sr Scientist will:

  1. Develop and commercialize differentiated new products across conventional, organic, keto, paleo guardrails supporting the values of unrivaled quality, creativity and innovation, and speed to market across core brands, existing pipeline, and adjacent category innovation platforms
  2. Advance the business through technical excellence ensuring all aspects meet or exceed the quality and product performance requirements within a managed timeline and cost objective
  3. Work with the BU to mitigate input costs, enhance margins through joined up cost leadership
  4. Influence and support internal teams, external stakeholders, and programs. Committed to rolling up sleeves to deliver great work while engaging colleagues at all levels/functions of organization
  5. Be tightly connected and a key contributor to the broader Sovos Brands Organization

Successful candidates will possess a proven ability to develop great tasting products with technical points of difference that provide sustainable competitive insulation; to interpret regulatory compliance standards; and to set the specifications, manufacturing processes and procedures that assure design and conformance to a set of quality standards of excellence. 

Job responsibilities:

The role is a balance of hands on product development, research sciences, and innovation leadership requiring knowledge of conventional, organic, and gluten/grain-free baking systems, sweetener and flavor sciences for keto and paleo diets.  Develop and to deliver consistent and great tasting product experiences from Concept to Commercialization:

  • Create and develop new products, rapid prototype, and establish a robust growth pipeline
  • Deliver great tasting differentiated products through robust design, sensory, consumer methods
  • Build capabilities in core sciences and applications to assure industry leading excellence in keto, paleo, and emerging lifestyle product development and innovation
  • Scale-up and commercialization across our supply network, suppliers, and co-packers
  • Define specifications and quality controls to assure robust manufacturing and finished good quality
  • Build a positive culture and inspire high performance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • S. in Food Science, Engineering, or related field with focus in baking science with 5-10+ years of broad and deep product innovation, value generation, and commercialization
  • Experienced Organic, NGP, Keto, Paleo product development. Technical competency in formulation and sensory sciences, sugar free, grain-free, gluten free ingredient functionality and performance
  • Successfully executed innovation programs from idea to implementation and Adept understanding of consumer, analytical and physical testing methodologies
  • Demonstrated leadership strength in developing and leveraging supplier innovation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • S./ Ph.D. Food Science, Engineering, or related field with focus in baking science
  • A mix of career experience across R&D, New Platform Innovation, Quality, Culinary creation
  • Strong industry and commercial acumen, technical and scientific development skills
