INTERNSHIP POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION:                Internship – Publishing and Digital Content

HOURS/PAY:                       

This is an unpaid internship, and students will be expected to work between 15-25 hours per week. Many colleges and universities provide academic credit for intern/externships. It is the student’s responsibility to contact their advisor and obtain academic credit within the institution’s guidelines.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

NCSL’s State Legislative News is seeking a self-driven intern who likes to write and has an affinity for public service. The intern will receive training in and experience of the editorial process, including writing and researching stories, learning A.P. Style, talking with NCSL staff who are experts on public policy, and other editorial duties as assigned. Stories written by the intern will be a part of the State Legislative News website (www.ncsl.org/magazine).

SPECIFIC PROJECTS / TASKS:

  • Creating new and original content that will be published online
  • Conducting interviews with state legislators, legislative staff and policy experts
  • Proofreading stories
  • Teaming with staff writers and editors
  • Participating in editorial meetings and having the opportunity to pitch stories and/or volunteer to take certain assignments
  • Writing and/or editing blog postings from staff
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Opportunity to enhance and improve your writing skills
  • Build your writing portfolio
  • Learn from our veteran writers and editors
  • Actively learn A.P. Style
  • Participate in NCSL staff meetings and take advantage of networking opportunities

QUALIFICATIONS:            

Qualified candidates should be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or graduate program. Candidates should possess strong computer and research experience and demonstrate exceptional skills and competence in writing clearly, communicating effectively and organizing complex assignments. Excellent English writing, editing and grammar skills are a must, as well as a passion and enthusiasm for writing.
