Flytedesk powers media and advertising on college campuses.
Company Description

Flytedesk powers media and advertising on college campuses. We build the technology that college media organizations and universities use to manage their operations. We build the technology that small businesses use to reach students. We work with brands, campaigns, and causes as their college partner in understanding, reaching, and driving outcomes with students.

We have a presence at almost every college in the country and the ability to reach 20 million students through campus billboards, student influencers, campus email newsletters, college newspapers, digital ads, SMS, and more.

We started flytedesk as the tool we needed at our college newspapers and have grown to become the single largest funding source for student journalism. Brick by brick, we’re creating a sustainable business model for college media by providing a coveted service to advertisers. We’re mission-driven, profitable, newly remote, and unrelenting in pushing our business and customers forward.

Full Job Description

This is the best job in the world… and the right person probably won’t even find that hyperbolic.

Our mission at flytedesk is to build a better future for college media. That means building on our existing relationships with virtually every college media organization in the country, and eventually onboarding all of the marketing opportunities that exist on and around a college campus.

Over the past 20 years, media companies (particularly news media) have suffered and contracted. But our partner organizations are reversing that trend and starting to grow and thrive again. Flytedesk is the largest funding source in America for student journalism and our work is creating opportunities for a new generation of journalists. This role is nestled right at the heart of our mission.

The ideal candidate is a proven leader and a dedicated, empathetic people manager. They’ll understand how to put principles before personalities and want to be part of a team building something meaningful and lasting. They may have had stints in sales or account management and found their way into a Publisher Development leadership role. They’ve likely experienced life at a startup as well as a bigger org, and decided through direct experience that the former is for them. They might have experience, interest, and/or reverence for the best parts of higher ed – and a dream candidate will have experience selling into universities. They’ll hold themselves to an exceptionally high-standard of work and find fulfillment in forging real, meaningful relationships.

responsibilities

Setting the Pace. In adtech parlance, flytedesk is an SSP, DSP, DMP, and consultant rolled into one. You’d own the business side of the SSP. We have a phenomenal young team in place, all recent grads who were flytedesk customers at their college media organizations. They’re already coaching and coaxing millions of dollars of spend in college media every month. You’d be responsible for representing the supply side within the leadership team and taking the supply team to the next level.

Sales. It’s not really a sales role because we already have a flag planted at every college. But we want you to take a sales mentality (in the best sense of the concept) to expanding that footprint on each campus aggressively. It’s fundamentally about relationships, our clients are smart and kind and doing important work and flytedesk is built on the work we’ve done together.

Marketing. One side of the coin is relationship management and the other is clearly, concisely, and frequently stating our vision for college media so that our ecosystem is excited to run there. That means town halls, monthly emails, partnerships with other organizations (ie. industry trade groups and journalism education non-profits), and harnessing leaders in the community to help reinforce our shared mission.

  • Student media experience a big plus!
