Experimental Plant Physiologist/Horticulturist/Botanist

Summary:
Horizon is seeking a self-motivated, innovative individual to work at the company’s R&D laboratory. This position’s primary responsibilities include
- Working with the Product Development and Sales and Marketing teams to generate plant physiology data with respect to existing and new products.
- Implementing new characterization techniques to monitor plant health
- Partnering with product development to brainstorm next generation products
- Managing different plant assay experiments
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to learning, strong problem-solving skills, effective and clear communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, an understanding of plant physiology and horticulture, and a dedication to maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient work environment.
Essential Functions:
- Design experiments and develop new procedures to test products on plant growth.
- Work with technicians to ensure that experiments are carried out efficiently and correctly.
- Execute experiments related to plant growth and physiology.
- Analyze and present data collected from experiments.
- Prepare and analyze plant samples.
- Prepare stock solutions.
- Maintain lab equipment and perform routine instrument operation, maintenance and calibration.
- Adhere strictly to safety standards during laboratory testing.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Product Innovation
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the qualities and skills described above, candidates should possess as many of the following qualifications as possible:
- Minimum of a B.S./B.A. degree. Preferred is a M.S. degree in biology, plant physiology, horticulture, agronomy, or a closely related field.
- Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
- Knowledge of growing plants in a laboratory/greenhouse setting.
- Excellent interpersonal and process-management skills.
- Analytical and critical-thinking skills.
- Aptitude for data analysis and statistics and the application of those results.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Classification: Exempt / Salary, paid bi-weekly, benefits eligible. Early career position with competitive compensation commensurate with experience
