Experimental Plant Physiologist/Horticulturist/Botanist

Summary:

Horizon is seeking a self-motivated, innovative individual to work at the company’s R&D laboratory. This position’s primary responsibilities include

1. Working with the Product Development and Sales and Marketing teams to generate plant physiology data with respect to existing and new products.
2. Implementing new characterization techniques to monitor plant health
3. Partnering with product development to brainstorm next generation products
4. Managing different plant assay experiments

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to learning, strong problem-solving skills, effective and clear communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, an understanding of plant physiology and horticulture, and a dedication to maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient work environment. 

Essential Functions:

• Design experiments and develop new procedures to test products on plant growth.
• Work with technicians to ensure that experiments are carried out efficiently and correctly.
• Execute experiments related to plant growth and physiology.
• Analyze and present data collected from experiments.
• Prepare and analyze plant samples.
• Prepare stock solutions.
• Maintain lab equipment and perform routine instrument operation, maintenance and calibration.
• Adhere strictly to safety standards during laboratory testing.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director of Product Innovation

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the qualities and skills described above, candidates should possess as many of the following qualifications as possible:

• Minimum of a B.S./B.A. degree. Preferred is a M.S. degree in biology, plant physiology, horticulture, agronomy, or a closely related field.
• Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
• Knowledge of growing plants in a laboratory/greenhouse setting.
• Excellent interpersonal and process-management skills.
• Analytical and critical-thinking skills.
• Aptitude for data analysis and statistics and the application of those results.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
