ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER - COLUMBUS CRAFT MEATS - HAYWARD, CA

Job Description

The Environmental Engineer will be responsible for supporting environmental compliance and process safety at Columbus facilities in Hayward (CA) and the Swiss American facility in Lathrop (CA). The incumbent will also support utility infrastructure systems at Columbus. These facilities operate on a three shift schedule for maintenance, with operations running 24/7 at some facilities. The incumbent reports to the Director of Engineering (Columbus) and works under very limited supervision. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Environmental Engineer is responsible for effective communication between plant engineering and other departments regarding the execution of process safety, environmental compliance programs and utility infrastructure efficiency improvements.

  • Develop, maintain, and implement compliance programs associated with process safety Specifically this includes the following programs: California Accidental Release Prevention (CalARP)/Risk Management Program (RMP) and Process Safety Management (PSM). Act as main point of contact for any regulatory agency inquiries in these areas. Lead and manage Emergency Response program.  
  • Act as a subject matter expert for ammonia refrigeration.  Participate in critical testing events (i.e.: function tests) and all ammonia-related incident investigations. Act as key resource in management of change and pre-startup safety review processes.  Manage longer term tasks such as 3-year compliance audits, 5-year independent full inspections, and others. Manage strategy for refrigeration system maintenance, including predictive (e.g., oil analysis, vibration analysis, etc.), and preventative maintenance. Ensure work orders and tasks are integrated with CMMS Maintenance Software and maintain system balance to illustrate installed capacity versus load. 
  • Manage and implement requirements to maintain Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP), Toxic Release Inventory, LSI Attestation, hazardous waste management and other environmental compliance programs as required. Ensure regulatory compliance in terms of air and water discharges. Act as main point of contact for any regulatory contacts from EPA, BAAQMD, DTSC, or other applicable regulatory agencies.  Manage programs concerning ozone depleting substances, spill prevention/control, and others. 
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements in areas of utility infrastructure, including but not limited to electrical safety, boiler safety, pressure vessel safety, etc. Provide operational support/technical assistance on infrastructure systems as required to promote efficient, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing. Support maintenance processes with technical troubleshooting and general engineering expertise. 
  • Develop and implement programs to conserve resources, reduce utility usage. Work closely with utility companies on programs understanding and best rate negotiation. Aggressively pursue rebate programs for energy efficiency initiatives. Support corporate Sustainability programs. 
  • Manage capital and/or maintenance projects in areas related to ammonia refrigeration and infrastructure systems as needed from time to time.  Act in advisory role on other capital projects related to utility infrastructure, including water, electrical, ammonia, utilities, etc.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • A strong pattern of initiative. 
  • Highly developed leadership skills. 
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills. 
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment. 
  • Ability to prioritize and balance many tasks simultaneously. 
  • Current CMRP (Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional) or ability to achieve certification in 18 months or less. 
  • Minimum of two years of mechanical systems experience and knowledge of ammonia refrigeration and process safety management.     

Preferred

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field with a background in environmental programs.
  • Successful completion of Dale Carnegie 36-hour leadership/speaking training course.
  • One or more years of successful experience in an environmental compliance position.
