Full Job Description

WAY More Than Just Number Crunching!

The Controller plays a key role at Illegal Pete’s, tasked with accounting for and reporting on all the burrito bucks in and out of the business.  This person reports to the President & CFO and collaborates with all levels of the organization.  There are a number of cool projects underway at Pete’s to improve efficiency in the business and support the operations teams and the Controller plays a significant role.  A successful candidate is one who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves on day-to-day accounting, is curious and a solutions-focused problem solver, and wants to be a part of a company focused on relaxed human connection. 

Controller Stuff:

  • Maintain an accurate general ledger including cash management, inventory, fixed assets & depreciation, accounts payable, accounting for payroll and employee benefits, leases, general & administrative expenses.
  • Monitor and reconcile all things revenue and cash including daily cash balances, credit card deposits, third-party delivery, catering receivables, etc.  Assist with cash-flow forecasting.
  • Review and support transactional accounts payable, sales & use tax, and payroll processing.
  • Communicate with vendors, banks, General Managers and Regional Directors regarding any cash or A/P issues as they arise.
  • Timely and accurate period-end close process including preparing and posting journal entries, balance sheet reconciliation, variance analysis, and operational insights.
  • Financial reporting to GMs, RDs, Home Office departments, and Executive Team. 
  • Support company financial planning and budget management functions. Work with management to help develop five- year strategic plan for the company.
  • Interface with outside consultants including banking, insurance, legal, 401k administration tax and accounting.
  • Support executive team with project feasibility analysis for new locations.  This may include loan documents, closing documents, operational proformas etc.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining best practices regarding restaurant cost controls.
  • Partner with President & CFO in company-wide profit and loss education (“P&L bootcamp”)
  • Complete ad hoc financial trend analysis as needed.  Analyze contracts, insurance policies etc.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate field-level financial review process and loss prevention assessments providing recommendations for procedural improvements.
  • Other duties and projects as required for success of the department and Illegal Pete’s mission and values.
