Role: Senior Accountant, full-time 

Location: Boulder/Denver CO  

 

Overview 

Verb Biotics is a new company built on Ginkgo Bioworks’ biotechnology platform with the goal of improving overall human health through probiotics (“biotic”) technology that provide consumers with an “I feel the effect” experience. At Verb, we target specific health and wellness conditions and develop “biotic” solutions that have a clear “mechanism-of-action.”  We are building a passionate team of health and wellness experts and are seeking a Senior Accountant. This is not a typical accounting position where you go from month-end to month-end closing, you will be a key part of building systems and infrastructure as we move into the revenue generating phase of the business. But… we still need to close the books every month 😊 

 

Job Summary 

The Senior Accountant will thrive in our fast-paced, start-up business environment. Reporting to the Head of Finance, the Senior Accountant will partner with commercial, R&D and operations teams to build and implement scalable order to cash and buy/make/sell business processes. You will be the champion of QuickBooks, the company’s accounting platform. This position will build protocols and document procedures for developing and maintaining company accounting records (customer, vendor, product, etc.). This position will work closely with the CEO & Head of Finance to develop and maintain 12-month rolling financial forecasts. The Senior Accountant will also work closely with Human Resources to aid with on-boarding new employees and benefit management and act as the main company contact for all Tax and annual Audit matters.  

 

Core Responsibilities 

 

  • Manage all company accounting activities including the preparation and analysis of monthly and quarterly financial statements.  
  • Work with Executive team to develop annual budget and 12 month rolling forecasts; supplies budget to actual reports and insights on operating variances. 
  • Create management reports for company and financial KPIs (key performance indicators). 
  • Cash management and reporting including management of AR and AP. 
  • Build and scale accounting process for start-up manufacturing company. 
  • Assist Executive team with preparation of Board materials including dashboard reports, financial and key performance indicators (KPIs) reporting. 
  • Proactively supply strategic insights and recommendations for operational improvement. 
  • Other responsibilities include ensuring company is compliant with accounting (GAAP) and tax regulations, tax preparation, coordinate annual financial audit. 
  • Administer payroll activities and payroll tax reporting. 

 

Qualifications / Skills 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Corporate Finance and Accounting; MS in Accounting and Finance preferred.  CPA not required but preferred. 
  • Experience with manufacturing or food ingredients highly desirable. 
  • 5-7 years proven success in relevant roles. 
  • Self-starter with a proven commitment to excellence; results-orientation. 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, combined local and remote teams. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Effective and discreet information management. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), DocuSign, SmartSheets, etc. 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and to delegate when appropriate.  
  • Creative mindset, curious and have a passion for learning.
