You’ll be the first dedicated People leader at Compa, reporting to the Director of Finance & Operations. Today HR duties are distributed across multiple leaders; tomorrow you will own the full employee lifecycle and design the systems that let us scale without breaking culture or compliance.
Core Responsibilities
- People Strategy & Org Design – Translate company initiatives into 6- to 12-month workforce plans; model hiring scenarios and capacity needs.
Talent Acquisition – Partner with our in-house recruiter to fill business-critical openings in < 45 days across every function.
- Total Rewards – Define and maintain global compensation bands tied to market benchmarks; develop equity refresh guidelines and partner with Finance on budgeting.
- HR Operations & Systems – Own HRIS, payroll, benefits, leave management and SOC 2 personnel controls.
- Employee Relations & Compliance – Advise managers; handle investigations, performance plans and terminations; stay current on employment law across 10+ U.S. states and 4+ countries in tandem with our international EOR.
- Culture – Lead engagement surveys, annual reviews, ERGs and L&D programs; set and track OKRs for retention, eNPS and representation.
- People Analytics – Build dashboards for headcount, attrition, span-of-control and productivity; present insights to senior leadership.
- Leadership & Team Building – Hire, mentor and scale a small but mighty People Ops team (recruiting, HRBP, office/IT) over the next 18 months.
- Tech & Tools – Own the full HR tech stack and identify new tools to help us scale (current stack: Gusto, Ashby, Oyster).
Success Looks Like
First 90 days: workforce plan delivered, HRIS/PEO selected, and engagement survey established.
First 6 months: HRIS live and payroll migrated, total rewards philosophy approved, hiring engine humming, and performance management launched.
Prepare for scale: excellence in onboarding, operations, and analytics to support growth to 150 employees and beyond.
About You
- 8–12 years leading People functions at venture-backed tech companies, including 2–4 years managing managers.
- Experience in B2B SaaS is a plus.
- Proven track record scaling from ≤ 50 to ≥ 150 global employees.
- Fluent in California and multi-state employment law; PHR/SPHR or SHRM-SCP preferred.
- Data-driven yet pragmatic—comfortable owning compensation philosophy and defending it with the board.
- Low ego, decisive and resilient in high-ambiguity, resource-constrained environments.
- Strategic communicator who can influence founders, investors and employees alike.
